Baby food

So Brynlee is now 4 months old... and this is the official age you can start rice cereal and introducing solids. I am just wondering how you guys went about doing this? At what age did you start?? How did you know your baby was ready??

I have thought a lot about when we would introduce solids and rice and everything else, but really haven't made any decisions about it. I definitely love breastfeeding for the convenience and nutrients for Brynlee. But I just can't decide exactly how to go about this. And I would be asking our doctor, but her 4 month check-up got pushed back 2 weeks. So yea.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

  1. I'm in the exact same spot as you right now girly. I've done quite a bit of research on it too, but it only left me more confused. So from what I've read, you can start solids between 4 and 6months, starting with one tbs of rice cereal and increasing them once per day up to 3-4, then adding on veggies and fruits and increasingly the same way. The important thing that I kept on seeing over and over, was not decreasing breastfeeding right now, because you're just trying to teach the baby how to eat with a spoon, but she still needs all the nutrients that breast milk/formula has to offer. My ped. recommended to start on rice cereal and do the fruit and veggies at six months to avoid allergies. But I think it's totally up to each mother, because there is research supporting diff. theories.
Sorry for the super long comment. haha. I hope it helped a bit? Good luck :-)

  2. When we started with Grace, we just added to the formula she was taking. So, it didn't replace it at all-- more like just a snack. Grace never took to rice cereal although we tried a few times. But the doctor said it was no big deal since there is not much nutritional value to rice cereal. Instead, we just let her eat whatever veggies and fruit she liked. And if she acted like she hated something at first, I would try it a few weeks later again to give her a second chance. Wow-- can you believe how much Brynlee is already growing up??

  3. I think I'm going to skip rice cereal or anything like that. I'm going to try to hold of until 5 or 6 months (pending Dr. McDowell's approval) and do homemade purees, and then do baby led weaning! www.wholesomebabyfood.com has some great information on baby led weaning. Basically, it's letting her eat what she wants as she wants it, with some assistance from the parent to help get mouth to hand, basically what you're sister did! I really like the concept, and Rylee is already really interested in us eating, she just stares in awe. So I think she's going to prefer it. I want to start with purees though, just to make sure she's ready since she still has a strong tongue thrust.
